Recycled Records has been in business for more than 26 years at our downtown location in the capital city of Springfield, Illinois. The store, owned and operated by brothers Gary and Mark Kessler, is at 625 E. Adams between 6th and 7th Streets, originally a furniture store opened by their grandparents in 1910.
During the 1970's, Gary and Mark haunted garage sales to build their music collections. Tired of this hit-or-miss approach, they saw the need for a business that would make it easier, and less costly, for music lovers to find what they wanted, They opened Recycled Records in 1980 with a modest collection of about 800 of their own LP's.
The Store's first display area was a 100-sqaure-foot landing between the first and second floors of the furniture store. Word spread about the venture, and the Kessler's were soon swamped with collectors who wanted to buy and sell and music lovers who liked their deeply discounted prices on used albums. Within 15 years, inventory occupied the entire second floor of the furniture store. In 2001 the main floor also became part of Recycled Records and the furniture moved into the basement where it still resides today.
Today, Recycled Records occupies the entire store including selling furniture from the basement and deals in both new and used products including DVD's CD's, LP's, cassette tapes, stereo equipment and vintage Playboys. Their in-store inventory of more than 70,000 titles is one of the largest in the world.
Mark and Gary have developed reputations as music experts who will try to find, often successfully, any title for you. They love the challenge of special requests, and they deal with collectors from all over the country to locate rare, out-of-print and "impossible-to-find" titles.
